Everyday is more fun than the last

Ok so Big Ben is much more fun than he was a few months ago.  He definitely had an impish way about him.  Both his mother and I feel that there is a trouble brewing - especially when that mischievous glint shines in his eye and his lower lip gets tucked in...oh you know you're in for it then!

Maybe it was the week of 4 am wake up calls or week of "no-naps" that caused me to have a little fun..but c'mon..I think I...nay WE earned it!

So sometimes - it is fun to have a little fun...well at his expense.  Does that make me a bad dad?  Check out this video and then tell me it didn't make you laugh.

Mobile Me

Again we are crap with the updates (thank you Jana for the nudge). Big milestones are happening at the Mezoff Monjan abode. Ben is finally crawling after what seems to be months of ‘he is SO CLOSE’ statements. As with everything he does it when HE wants to. No cajoling, no enticements, nothing could get him to move on the many times mommy tried to catch it on video. In fact there are several times where he looked at me, and just cackled, as if to say, I know you want it on tape SUCKER.

Ben can get himself to a sitting pose like a champ. And likes to practice this maneuver when he is supposed to be putting himself to sleep. I often watch Ben TV (the monitor) and watch him sit up in the crib and methodically throw out every pacifier he has onto the floor. He also is a massive wiggle worm on the changing table and needs to always have something in his hands to distract him. Course whatever is in his hand soon finds its way wedged behind the changing table. Today I pulled out a hair brush, pacifier, plastic bag of qtips and three diapers.

Our boy is extremely headstrong and is not shy about telling you what he wants. Any table food he doesn’t want gets thrown to the floor (Maxy loves Ben even more after this trick). Any spoon fed food he doesn’t want is met by a scrunched up face and an amazingly fast swing of the hand that usually sends it spraying all over him, you, the tray, and with a really good shot, onto the floor. He also sticks his tongue out and gives you a raspberry. Charmer, isn’t he.

We are eating new table foods every day. So far grapes, raspberries, peaches and wheat bread are on our likes list. Chicken and peas are not. Unfortunately peas are also on Maxy’s do not like list so we actually have to get down and clean those up. Having a dog is a true joy on the ‘dump all the cheerios to the floor’ days.

On the talking front we can say a version of mama mama, though he has not clue who mama is. And there are words that sound very much like dog (gog) and baby that come from Ben.

This week and weekend will be devoted to finding stuff for baby proofing. Though he isn’t traveling very fast or very far we expect it to happen very soon. He already reaches for the electrical outlet. I think soon Ben will think his name is Uh Uh or NO. Ben doesn’t look phased by the reprimands but Maxy continually thinks he’s in trouble.

Relaxing and Maxing

This weekend was just what the doctor ordered.  We started with Pizza Friday (extra cheese and sauce) and a couple glasses of wine which Ben proceeded to try to scheme his way into (that kid is persistant and has hands of lightning speed).  I fear Big Ben is going to be a partier come college (when  he reaches the legal drinking age of course).

Neither Mom, Dad, Max or Big Ben made it past nine-thirty but that 's ok because Saturday was full of play.  We pulled the coffee table aside, threw down blankets and pillows in the family room and played with a plethora of stuffed animals, books, and blocks while jamming out to the iTouch in front of the fireplace.

Funny thing about my iTouch. We had it on shuffle which meant that we would be jamming out to Kings of Leon or Green Day at one moment only to sing along to Cookie Monster and his "Me Lost Me Cookie at the Disco" or Kermit the Frog's  "Rainbow Connection" next.  Yes we are have become those people.

Interesting note on kids music.  There is a song called the Calypso Pig in which Miss Piggy sings about her love for her green Kermy.  In which he replies...and I am not kidding when I say this...Miss Piggy will get no play...Napkin, bib, knife and fork is the only way I'll touch pork.  Can you believe that?  Might be one of my favorite lyrics right now :)

Speaking of lyrics, listening to Mom belt out "Empire State of Mind" while Dad tried to harmonize to Michael Franti and Spearhead's "Say Hey" song all but ensured that our son won't be auditioning for American Idol anytime soon.

Inspired by the talking frog, we capped the night by eating smoked pork (our third attempt at smoking a pork shoulder (7 hrs) in the Big Green Egg).  Thank you Steve Dembo for that recommendation.  It truly is a wonderul thing.  I think we have the timing down but not the right temperature.  At least the mistakes  have been tasty!

All that playing and singing paid off because Big Ben slept in this morning (almost 8am) which allowed me to expend much needed energy on shoveling.  We had four inches fall last night for a total of two shovel jobs this winter (that's already double than the amount of pushing that I had to do last winter).  Global warming my...pork shoulder.

Pictures and videos to come soon.

And we're back!

Man so many milestones so many months to report on - where to start? How about by saying that in 2010 we resolve to update Ben's first year more frequently - (I say we resolve to do it - but we also resolved to eat better, be better organized, lose weight, use the Wii fit every morning, and a few more things yet to play out). By the way - I actually didn't have any resolutions but Lori told me that she had enough for me to adopt.

So here is a little recap since we last posted plus some great video of Ben and his new free-style-award-winning-Americal Idol-original creation - the Bwahh Bwah song.)

Now without any further ado. Top ten things that have occured in late 2009 and early 2010

10. Ben reversed the curse and actually wore Steelers apparel and they won! Unfortunately it was a little too late for Ben and his mighty black and gold team. Next year they'll be back in the hunt. Or he'll just wear the other teams apparel. On a good note - we're 2-0 when wearing MD gear and watching Terps basketball.

9. The entire family (both two legged and four) succesfully made a roundtrip roadtrip to Boston with only two tiny melt-downs and very little shaking (Max gets a little nervous when he thinks we are anywhere in a vincinty of a Vet's office). We only had to stop once each way during the 8 hour drive - and that said that couldnt be done!

8. Big Ben can do the following

  • Sit up by himself, my boy's got abs of steel. Look out for his 2010 ab workout DVD

  • Eat, and man can he put that food away. Fruits, veggies, rice cereal, oatmeal and he does also grab for mommy and daddy's wine.

  • Poop which is why Lori and I have taken to playing poop roulette. The game begins with the changer pleading"no poopie, no poopie no poopie (a la Let's Make a Deal/Whammy) amd ends with either an audible sigh or a shout to the tune of "OH-DEAR-LORD-THAT-IS-DISGUSTING -I-MEAN-IT-IS-UP-HIS-BACK!" followed by hysterical laughing from the poop's creator. Which brings me to my next thing he can do

  • Laugh. The kid ain't quiet. We (and by we mean Ben) mostly likes to laugh at 5am or late at night during "quiet" time. For some reason life is just funnier when parents are tired.

  • Blow bubbles with his massive amounts of drool. I swear my kid drools more than a mastif but he has learned to turn that drool into some spectaular bubbles. Which of course is pretty funny - especially when mommy is feeding him mashed green beans. Not so funny when you are holding him above your head and you see a stream coming at you and it pools all over your forehead or mouth.

  • Use both hands. Big Ben loves to grab, smack, pound, push, beat and a myriad of other things that you can do with your hands. He also has a knack for grabbing those hairs right on the back of your head, your neck skin and your lips.

  • He's quick too! When I change him into his bedtime jammies one hand inevitably grabs a wipey while the other hand reaches for a poopy diaper. He can also bang two things together and loves to do so. According to the baby sites that's an advanced behavior. According to mom and dad - duhhhh of course he's advanced!

  • Be strong! The other day Big Ben snatched the iTouch out of Dad's hand and it was like wrestling with the front line of (insert your football team's name here) to get it back.

7. We have also pushed out two teeth (center bottom) and at this point, we're days away from seeing two more!

6. Dad realized that he truly was a Dad. I'm not saying that these past 6 months have been un-dad like but the other day, after feeding Ben, Ben decided to shower me in everything he'd eaten that day - over my bare arms. I didn't flinch. I didn't scream. I simply said...you know if that were another kid's digested carrots I think I'd be pretty grossed out and contribute a little of my own lunch. But with my own son it was just par for the course. I lost at poop roulette later that night too - sigh.

5. Lori claims that Ben can now be put into his crib for naps and soothe himself to sleep. I still like holding him until he's asleep and then put him into crib with my patented - rocker-to-crib-asleep move.

4. Lori and Ben have started to go to music together classes which may explain Big Ben's love of percussive sounds and, unfortunately, Elmo.

3. We like to be read books - specifically Todd Parr books. Thank you Aunt Sheri and Uncle Seth! Those we are curious why you chose the book "It's Ok To Be Different." What exactly are you trying to say?

2. Ben's smile. I can't tell you how much that thing can bring you out of a funk, be the ultimate welcome home, and make my heart sing. I love that smile.

1. Ben's started to be more vocal which is why I am including his debut hit single the "Bwah Bwah song" here. Please enjoy and let us know your thoughts!
